On My Nightstand June 1, 2024

I’m back from my nephew’s graduation and a visit to my favorite book store in the world- Book Barn in Niantic, Connecticut. If you ever have a chance to go, do it! I could spend hours there wandering between the various buildings searching for treasures. I ended up with some summer reading for my kids, one for me, and a mini-stack of vintage Nancy Drews.

Now that we’re home I’m putting in the hours cleaning up my garden and getting back to my walking routine. I have an audiobook going at all times of course!

Have a great week all!

Quote of the week

This is what you must remember: the ending of one story is just the beginning of another.
— The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

Reading This Week:

Kindle - The Hudson Collection by Jocelyn Green - I have an ARC of this book. It comes out in three days so I need to get it done. I’m enjoying it so far so that shouldn’t be a problem!

Audio - The Silence of the Library by Miranda James - I’ve been listening to this series in between other heavier books.

Paper - Songs In Ordinary Time by Mary McGarry Morris - I got this at a friends of the library sale last year and I keep forgetting to read it. This is the week!

Thanksgiving break is almost over. Bring on the chaos! I’m signed up for a about 1 million challenges on Litsy. It should be a productive reading month!

Have a great week!

Quote of the Week:

Every traveler has a home of his own, and he learns to appreciate it the more from his wandering.
— A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

On my nightstand:

The Great Displacement by Jake Bittle -- I’ve been reading this all month, and my one goal this week is to finish before Dec. 1!

Four soccer games this weekend, two days of work, and then a break! I can’t wait. I have about five audiobooks in from the library, and I plan to listen to them all while I putter around my house. I think it’s supposed to be cold too, so it will feel extra Thanksgivingy.

Have a great week!

Quote of the Week:

There is always someone willing to think the worst.
— My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

On my nightstand:

How Not To Drown In A Glass of Water by Angie Cruz -- I downloaded this last night when I couldn’t sleep, and wow is it good! I love the characters and the format.

Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros -- I have about 1 1/2 hours left in this audiobook, and I am listening to it every chance I get! Yes there’s a lot of hype, but it’s for a reason. These books are a lot of fun.

The Great Displacement by Jake Bittle -- Yup, still reading this one. It’s a deep read, and I haven’t had the space to sit down and think while I read. This week I should finish!

We somehow have a week off from sports and school obligations, so we took advantage and spent the day on the water at St. Michael’s, Maryland. Great town, but no bookstore.

Have a great week!

Quote of the Week:

Finally, from so little sleeping and so much reading, his brain dried up and he went completely out of his mind.
— Don Quixote

On my nightstand:

Reign by Katharine McGee -- I absolutely love this series. So fun.

From Beer to Eternity by Sherry Harris -- Another cozy for my book club. I’m a little burnt out on cozies after reading so many last month, but I’m enjoying it.

The Great Displacement by Jake Bittle -- Still working on this one. A really interesting read, but not one I can read quickly.

My First Visit To A Bookstore Post COVID-19

Last week I was was in Wolfeboro, NH visiting my family. We were playing it pretty safe cooking our own meals, taking long walks, and swimming at an isolated section of lake, but at one point I did sneak away to visit a bookstore I heard was open. (Shout out to The Country Bookstore.)

It was great to be back. You know that feeling of being in a bookstore and finding books you didn’t even know you were interested in? Man, I had missed that.

The bookstore itself was great for browsing. I was the only one in there at the time (the bookseller told me they had been doing insane amounts of mail order.) The books were laid out nicely so that I didn’t have to touch everything just to see the titles. They had a great big kids’ section, and a wide variety of adult topics as well. In short, bookworm heaven.

I have mixed feelings about entering any kind of building at this point, and spend most of my time outside or in my very own house. My garden is producing so even my trips to the grocery store are getting rarer. But, for one brief 20 minute period of time, I felt normal and happy again. Thank you The Country Bookstore.

Books I'm actually going to buy

I'm a heavy library user - both out of cheapness, and out of a strong desire not to have my house collapse under the weight of all the books I would own if I had to buy everything I read. That said, there are two books I've decided to pre-order this summer, because I just can't wait for the library.

Just like every other Muggle around I'll be reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child this summer. I'm sure there will be spoilers galore, and I want to binge on this one before I read all about it on Twitter.
I LOVED The Fifth Season when I read it last week, and NEED to read the next installment, The Obelisk Gate, when it comes out in August. It comes out two days after my birthday, so this won't be hard to justify!

Do you still read actual books (not in electronic format?) Are there any you're planning on adding to your shelves this summer?
