Walking Wednesday October 23, 2024

I was everywhere last week. I spent two days at a conference in Hoboken, NJ (across the river from Manhattan), and then came home and was all over town looking at Halloween stuff. This is a great time of year for walking!

This week I’m listening to Murder Lo Mein by Vivien Chien. It’s making me hungry!

I am loving all the October sights on my walks. It’s mostly dark when I’m out now, but every once in a while they let me out during the day.

This week I’m listening to See Something by Carol J Perry for my book club. It’s a cozy mystery that takes place in Salem, MA. Yay for seasonal reads!

There are definite signs of fall on my walks now. I love the change of seasons. It makes walks so much more interesting. There are a few Halloween decorations out now, but they should be out in full force starting next weekend.

I’ve been listening to You Like It Darker by Stephen King. Very atmospheric for my dark fall walks!

I am seeing signs of fall everywhere! I’m not usually one to celebrate the end of summer, but the heat this year has been so miserable I say bring on the pumpkin spice. I’ll be the one dressed like a Gilmore Girl taking walks in my neighborhood listening to audiobooks.

This week I’m listening to Sunburn by Laura Lippman. Her books are great on audio.

The time change really cut into my desire to walk last week. I got out a bit on Sunday, and did my normal Monday long walk, but didn’t do much beyond that. This week I need to wake up and walk.

I somehow got Iron Flame from the library on release day, so I’ll be listening to that this week so the next person in line can get it.

It’s winter here now! That’s not to say it won’t be summer again by Christmas. While it lasts I’m loving taking out my cozy walking gear.

I started a non-fiction book about Greenland today. It’s a little dry but the descriptions of the landscape are fitting my vibe. It’s called The Ice At The End Of The World.

It’s getting darker and darker when I walk, meaning I don’t have as many pictures. Check out the creepy friend I made on the metro the other morning though. Not exactly what you want to see when it’s 5:30 am and dark. I would love to know the story behind that thing.

I’ve been listening to another cozy - Clammed Up by Barbara Ross. If what you listen to while you’re exercising leads you to eat blueberry pie is that a problem?

Walks around the soccer field continue! Nights are darker and I’m enjoying bringing my colder weather gear out.

I’m about to finish listening to the cozy Leave No Scone Unturned. I’m flying through the cozies this month. Tis the season! (This was free on audible.)

I’m hoping this is the last really hot week in a summer of really hot weeks. Walking has been pretty miserable, and everything is looking kind of dead. Thank goodness for audiobooks!

This week I’ve been switching between Bette & Joan: The Divine Feud by Shaun Considine and Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk. Both are really good in different ways!

Another week of walks by the soccer field! I also started going back to the gym some mornings, but there’s nothing worth taking pictures of there.

My listen this week is Day of Fire: A Novel of Pompeii. It’s a bit out of my comfort zone, but I like that it’s written by six different authors.

School is back in session, and a lot of my walks are now taking place during various sports practices. As the kids get older the practices get later, and that works so much better for my schedule. Who are the people available to drive across town to drop their kids at soccer at 4 pm on a random weekday?

I’ve been listening to Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. This book gets a lot of hype, but it’s a little long for my tastes. Grateful that my library had it on audio so I wasn’t tempted to buy it.

It’s still as hot an humid as ever here, but there have been signs of fall on my walks. Bring on the sweater weather. I’m over this summer that seems to want to kill us all.

When walking I’ve been listening to A Bad Day For Sunshine by Darynda Jones. I love starting a new series!

A Bookish Hike: Mt. Greylock

Tributes to famous authors dot the summit

Tributes to famous authors dot the summit

If you’re a bookish hiker and are looking for a fall foliage pilgrimage you can’t do much better than Mt. Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts.

Mt. Greylock has been an inspiration for many writers over the years. Nathaniel Hawthorne mentioned it in his short story Ethan Brand. Herman Melville was said to have decided to write about whales when he saw the snow covered slope of the mountain out his window. And more recently, J.K. Rowling set Ilvermorny, the North American school of witchcraft and wizardry in the there.

There’s an auto road to the top, but driving means you’d miss out on hiking a beautiful stretch of the Appalachian Trail. There is of course the foliage that New England is known for, but you also get to hike through the only taiga-boreal forest in the state. In English this means there are many beautiful pine and spruce trees.
